In 2018, at the Paris Motor Show, Renault demonstrated the conceptual K-ZE compact crossover, which greatly interested the world community.

The reason for this is the pre-installed electric motor and the ambitious cost of about $ 8,000, which automatically makes the novelty one of the most affordable electric cars in the world.

Throughout 2018, the French tormented the public in anticipation, and at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show, the company shows a pre-production version of the model - Renault City K-ZE, with which we invite you to get to know better.

External appearance

In terms of design, the Renault City K-ZE is a slightly modernized version of the Renault Kwid, selling well in the Indian market. The “muzzle” of the compact crossover demonstrates spectacular head optics, an original false radiator grille with a large company logo in the center, as well as a powerful bumper with large running lights and fog lights.

When looking at an electric car in profile, large wheel arches, massive stampings on the sidewalls, a sloping roofline and special plastic inserts on the side doors that perform not only a decorative, but also a protective function are striking. By the way, there is “off-road” plastic protection along the entire perimeter of the body.

The stylish stern is represented by large side lights, a compact luggage compartment lid and a massive bumper with neat foglights and a chrome decorative insert in the center.

Unfortunately, the exact dimensions of the electric crossover are unknown. The manufacturer announced only the length, length of the wheelbase and ground clearance, which are 3740, 2430 and 150 mm, respectively. It is expected that the car will be able to offer customers a large number of body colors.

Interior

Salon Renault City K-ZE is made in the corporate style of the latest models of the company, operating in the budget class. In front of the driver there is a three-spoke steering wheel with decorative inserts and a modern digital instrument panel, for reading information from which even a cursory glance is enough.

In the central part of the dashboard, the manufacturer has placed a large display of the multimedia center with touch control, a little lower - several function buttons, and even lower - a laconic control unit for the in-cabin climate. The quality of finishing materials is frankly budgetary, but the assembly and ergonomics are at a very good level.

For the front riders, moderately comfortable seats are prepared with a sufficient number of adjustments, which frankly lacks lateral support. Between the seats there is a central panel on which the parking brake lever and a small washer are huddled, which acts as a gearbox. Which gearbox is preinstalled in the City K-ZE, the manufacturer decided to keep silent.

Despite its compact dimensions, the machine has a fairly roomy second row of seats, which can accommodate three adult riders.

The volume of the trunk is declared at around 300 liters, while if you fold the backs of the second row of seats, you can increase the volume of usable space by more than three times. In the underground trunk there was a place for a spare tire and a repair kit.

Unfortunately, at the moment there is very little information about the technical stuffing of the compact crossover, the serial version of which should enter the world market in the very near future.

So, it is known that the Renault City K-ZE will be driven by a 50 kW electric motor, which will allow you to drive about 271 km on a single charge (according to NEDC), which in practice will allow you to count on 200 km of travel.

The company promises that the battery recharge time from 0 to 80%, when using fast charging, will be no more than 50 minutes, which, given the cost and positioning of the model, is a very good indicator. When using a regular household network, the charging process will take about 4 hours.

But there is no data on dynamic characteristics, but it is easy to guess that in this regard the car definitely does not have outstanding characteristics.

The novelty is built on the basis of Renault Kwid, which means that the front axle is represented by independent MacPherson struts, and the rear - by a torsion beam and semi-independent architecture. Already in the base, the car will be equipped with an electric power steering wheel, as well as front disc and rear drum brakes.

It is assumed that the electric crossover can get an all-wheel drive transmission, but if this happens, then no earlier than mid-2020. Until then, buyers will have to settle for solely front-wheel drive.

2020 Renault City K-ZE price and technical equipment

Despite the fact that the final prices for the car have not yet been announced, there is a rumor on the network that the basic version will cost 7.9 thousand euros, which is quite inexpensive for a full-fledged electric car. But for the top version, the buyer will have to pay at least 8.8 thousand euros.

The list of standard equipment will include:

  • electric power steering;
  • steel discs;
  • digital instrument panel;
  • power windows for the front doors;
  • driver's airbag;
  • seat belts;
  • plastic protection around the perimeter of the body;
  • Isofix fasteners and other little things.

In a more expensive version, the buyer can count on the presence of a multimedia center with a touch screen, air conditioning, tire pressure monitoring system, rear view camera, front passenger airbag, roof rails and alloy wheels.

It is known that initially the car will appear on the Chinese market, while it is quite possible that the car will be able to reach the Russian market.

Conclusion

The Renault City K-ZE is a stylish compact crossover that can revolutionize the electric vehicle segment. This is facilitated not only by an attractive appearance, a solid interior and a good set of equipment, but also a humane price tag. Also note that over the next few years, the French intend to electrify a number of current models, in particular - Renault Clio, Megane and Captur.
