In 2012, the Japanese car brand Mazda presented its first compact crossover CX-5, which became a kind of pioneer for the company, since it was in this crossover that the concept of "Kodo" was first tested, as well as the unique technology Skyactiv, which later became one of the business cards of the auto concern. As conceived by the Mazda management, the crossover was supposed to become the unquestioning leaders in its class, not only in Japan, but also in the automotive markets of other countries, including the USA and Russia. And even though it was not possible to realize what was planned, the car was nevertheless warmly received by the world public and even for some time became a key model in the model range of the Japanese brand.
A few years later, the company's management decided to slightly modernize the car. The changes affected the exterior and interior of the crossover, as well as the list of available equipment and finishing materials, which have significantly increased in quality. The reason for such a speedy restyling of an already in high demand model is seen not only to update the Mazda 6 series sedan and station wagon, but also to support the younger brother CX-3, which debuted in 2015 in California.
Before moving on to a more detailed consideration of the changes in the CX-5 2016 model range, it is worth making a reservation that due to the difficult economic situation in the world, the Mazda management has made a decision according to which the appearance of the North American version will not differ in any way from the European one - for a similar step in the company come running for the first time.
Exterior of the updated Mazda CX-5
Mazda decided not to make any revolutionary changes in the appearance of the CX-5 and limited itself to a slight facelift, which once again emphasized the sporty style and dynamics of the crossover. The front part has acquired an enlarged radiator grille with massive horizontal crossbars, as well as a new bumper, on the sides of which there are original "nostrils" of the air intakes with foglights mounted in them. In addition, the “muzzle” of the car received a different filling of the head optics, where, in addition to the standard lighting, “turn signals” with LED lights were installed. As an option, the installation of adaptive LED lighting has become available, which is still rarely found in cars of this class.
The profile of the Mazda CX-5 has remained virtually unchanged. There are still original undulating stampings on the doors and wheel arches, and the flat roof is framed by a powerful spoiler designed to improve the aerodynamic properties of the car. Only the side mirrors have become new, which have been retrofitted with turn signal repeaters. The stern also underwent minimal changes - the designers equipped the car with slightly different drop-shaped side lights, in which LED elements can be installed for an additional fee, as well as a more elegant bumper, on the sides of which there are exhaust pipes and sections with reflectors. Around the perimeter of the entire body there is a plastic body kit that protects the car body from scratches when driving over rough terrain.
The external dimensions of the crossover remain the same and are:
- Length - 4540 mm;
- Width - 1840 mm;
- Height - 1705 mm;
- Clearance crossover is 210 mm. regardless of the level of equipment, and the wheelbase is 2700 mm.
The updated Mazda CX-5 will appeal to fans of maximum personalization, since in comparison with the previous version, the car received several new body colors, including brown Titanium and silver Sonic.
The interior of the restyled CX-5
There are significantly more changes in the interior of the model than outside, while the interior is still laconic and Japanese-style functional. Mazda designers have slightly changed the layout of the center console, where a new vehicle climate control unit and a new, more modern multimedia system have settled. For the front panel trim elements, the buyer can opt for traditional glossy inserts, metal or brushed aluminum look inserts. The designers decided to abandon the traditional handbrake lever, replacing it with an electronic control button.
As before, the driver's seat is ergonomic, there is sufficient lateral support, as well as many settings, thanks to which a driver of almost any size can sit comfortably behind the wheel.
The steering wheel offers adjustments for both height and reach, and is also equipped with many buttons to control the on-board computer and the car's entertainment system.
Thanks to the wheelbase of 2700 mm, the passengers of the rear sofa feel more than comfortable, which allows them to accommodate up to three adult passengers, however, due to a slightly small central pillow in the center, the child will still be more comfortable. If necessary, the rear seats can be folded (40/60 ratio), which allows you to increase the trunk volume from the standard 403 liters to 1560 liters. The manufacturer notes that for greater passenger comfort, not only were the finishing materials improved, but also the interior noise insulation, where, according to Mazda representatives, the noise absorption rate was increased by 10%.

In terms of powertrains, the updated CX-5 offers nothing new. The crossover, as before, is offered with three power units - two petrol and one diesel. Gasoline engines are represented by a 2-liter 150 horsepower and 2.5-liter 192-horsepower unit. Acceleration from 0 to 100 takes 7.9 seconds for the more powerful engine and 9.3 seconds for the less powerful 2-liter petrol. Fuel consumption ranges from 6.2 to 7.5 l / 100 km on the combined cycle. Such characteristics are achieved thanks to the use of the unique SKYACTIV technology, due to which the crossover leaves even more famous competitors far behind.
The diesel engine is presented with a volume of 2.2 liters and is capable of developing 175 hp, while the fuel consumption is only 5.3 liters.
Regardless of the volume and type of engine, the car can be equipped with both a manual and an automatic transmission, while both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive modifications are available.
The suspension of the updated CX-5 is represented by MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link at the rear, while the designers used new shock absorbers and modified front suspension bushings.
Safety
Even in the first generation, the CX-5 achieved excellent results in the EuroNCAP crash tests, and the novelty was no exception. The car received 5 stars, and an important aspect is the fact that even in the basic equipment the car offers a full set of airbags, ABS, EBD, EBA systems. In more expensive trim levels, the car can be equipped with adaptive cruise control, a system for preventing a frontal collision at low speeds and tracking road markings, adaptive optics, as well as tracking the "blind" zones of the crossover.
Thanks to a good level of equipment and a high degree of protection for the driver and passengers, the crossover can be confidently recommended as a family car that can feel confident not only in urban areas, but also on moderately broken dirt roads.
Options and prices of the new Mazda CX-5
In the domestic market, the updated CX-5 is offered in four trim levels:
- Drive - represented by a 2-liter gasoline engine with a choice of automatic or manual transmission, as well as front-wheel drive. The equipment level is represented by the following elements:
- cloth interior;
- full power accessories;
- several airbags;
- air conditioner;
- front optics washer;
- heated side mirrors;
- system of starting the motor from the button.
The price of the basic version starts at $ 18.1 thousand (RUB 1.214 million). - Active - represented by a gasoline and diesel engine, exclusively with an automatic transmission, but with a choice between an all-wheel drive and a mono-drive version. The list of equipment is supplemented with options:
- climate control;
- leather-trimmed steering wheel and gearbox;
- multifunction steering wheel;
- rain and lighting sensors.
For an additional fee, you can install an automatic headlight adjustment system, as well as lane tracking and blind spot monitoring. The cost starts at $ 20.1 thousand (about 1.35 million rubles). - Supreme - a version that offers maximum comfort, supported by a fully leather interior, electrically adjustable seats, an advanced Hi-Fi system and other "goodies". The price of this configuration starts at 22.9 thousand dollars or 1.54 million rubles.
- Active + - this equipment also starts from the mark of 1.54 million rubles. However, unlike Supreme, the main emphasis in it is not on maximum comfort, but on the dynamic characteristics of the crossover, therefore, in this configuration, the car is equipped exclusively with a 2.5-liter gasoline engine, an all-wheel drive system and an automatic transmission.
Despite a rather good choice of trim levels, representatives of the auto concern emphasize that in the future, trim options can be somewhat expanded not only in terms of equipment level, but with a new line of power units.
As a conclusion, it is worth noting that despite minor changes in appearance, the updated CX-5 has become even more dynamic and modern. And thanks to the use of the proprietary SKYACTIV technology, the car has more high-torque and responsive engines that can compete with Nissan X-Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander and Honda CR-V.
